The Legend of Korra is an American animated television series that aired on the Nickelodeon television network from 2012 to 2014. It was created by Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino as a sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender, which aired from 2005 to 2008. Drawn in a style strongly influenced by Japanese animation, the series is set in a fictional universe in which some people can manipulate, or "bend", the elements of water, earth, fire, or air. Only one person, the "Avatar", can bend all four elements, and is responsible for maintaining balance in the world. The series follows Avatar Korra, the reincarnation of Aang from the previous series, as she faces political and spiritual unrest in a modernizing world.

Seventy years after the end of the original series, the Order of the White Lotus discovers the new Avatar, Korra, in the Southern Water Tribe. By the age of 17, Korra has mastered all the elements except air. Master Tenzin, Katara's and Aang's son, and the only airbending master, wants to postpone Korra's airbending training in order to take care of matters in Republic City, but Korra convinces him to train her. After a clash with local triads, she is arrested by Lin Beifong, head of Republic City's metalbending police force and the daughter of Toph. Meanwhile, antagonist 'Amon' is identified as the leader of the anti-bender "Equalist" movement.

Frustrated with her failed attempts to master airbending on Air Temple Island, Korra disobeys her teacher, Tenzin, and shifts her focus to Republic City's famous Pro-bending Arena. There, she befriends the brothers Mako and Bolin, who compete in pro-bending matches on their team, the Fire Ferrets. When their waterbender leaves the team, Korra steps up and takes his place.

Mako and Bolin look for ways to acquire the thirty thousand yuans required for their team to remain in the Pro-bending Tournament. Bolin finds himself in a dangerous situation after accepting a job from the Triple Threat Triad. Worried, Korra and Mako search for him and they learn of an upcoming Equalist rally. Attending the mass meeting, Korra learns more about the anti-bending movement and their mysterious leader, Amon. However, they are forced to intervene in order to save Bolin's bending abilities.

Mako meets Asami Sato in a small accident, leading to a romantic date and her introducing him to her father, Hiroshi Sato, who offers to sponsor the Fire Ferrets in the Pro-bending Tournament. Meanwhile, Korra is coerced into joining Councilman Tarrlok's task force, intending to rid the city of Equalists. She later challenges Amon to a duel at Aang Memorial Island, which ends up being a trap, during which he warns her of his upcoming plans.
